Buffalo ProductsFor the Plains tribes of North America, the bison, more commonly know as buffalo, was a way of life. Tribes like the Northern Arapaho and the Eastern Shoshone got everything from the buffalo: their food, their tipis, as well as their clothing, tools and weapons. They did not waste any part of the animal. Horns were carved into spoons, hides transformed into robes, even the teeth were used to make necklaces and adorn clothing. ![]() Buffalo hides are available, tanned, beaded or painted. Because of this significance, the buffalo was and is extremely important in the religious hierarchy of all Plains tribes. The tribes may not rely on bison for their daily existence today, but the animal is still considered sacred. Buffalo skulls are an integral part of the sun dance ceremony, one of the holiest Plains Indians' celebrations.
