Ivory Products (Elk & Buffalo)In a culture where everything has a utilitarian purpose, elk ivory and bison teeth were unique because they were prized purely for their aesthetic appeal. Ivories were rare and hard to come by, so like precious stones they were saved for adornment. Necklaces were made from ivories, and they were sewn onto dresses for decoration. Because of their value, ivories were traded between tribes in return for other rare, prized items such as cowry shells, feathers and even horses. ![]() Buffalo & Elk Teeth Ivory Necklaces by Artist, Debbie Vega (Northern Arapaho) Ancient Ways, LLC © 2001-2002 Ancient Ways, LLC - Fort Washakie, Wyoming. |
